Walter Jaggard was born in 1877 in West Row,(Mildenhall Q3-1877 4A:541), son of Thomas and Floretta Belinda JAGGARD (née HINDS).
1881 census...Aged 3, he was at West Row with his father Thomas JAGGARD [42] a cattle dealer; his mother Floretta B [43] born in U.S.A.; sisters Ellen B [22], Louisa [8] and Kate [5]; brothers Thomas A [19], George [17], William [15] and Frederic [7]; and Ellen HINDS [29] relationships unknown but likely to be Walter's aunt. All except his mother were born in Mildenhall. His mother died in Q3-1885. 1891 census...Aged 13, he was at 47 High Street, Beck Row with his widower father; widowed sister Ellen B WRIGHT; brother Robert (butcher); sisters Emma, Caroline and Kate, and Ellen S HINDS 1901 census...Aged 23, farmer's son, he was at The Street, Beck Row with his father and sister Ellen B WRIGHT. He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds and served first in the 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Dying of his wounds and his Army records not being available, it is impossible to state precisely where or when he was wounded. At the end of October the battalion were in the line near Sepmeries and on the 29th a direct hit on Battalion HQ killed 2 and wounded 8, maybe this was it? He was originally buried in Sepmeries Communal Cemetery with six others, but on 26th May 1952 they were exhumed and moved to Villers-Pol. The Bury Free Press of 14th December 1918 reported :- DEATH OF A BECK ROW SOLDIER News has been received by his family that 28610 Pte. W.Jaggard,11th Suffolk Regt., has died of wounds in France. he was wounded during severe fighting on November 1st and it appears that he died on his way to hospital. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. Thomas Jaggard, and was home on leave to attend the funeral in September last. He had served in France since 1916, and had escaped injury up to the closing days of the war. Pte Jaggard was 41 years old, and the news of his death has evoke much sorrow and sympathy in the Mildenhall district where he was well known.
